Spalding County is located in the west-central part of Georgia and encompasses 201 square miles. Bordered by Clayton, Coweta, Fayette, Henry, Butts, Lamar, Pike, and Meriwether counties, Spalding County lies 40 miles south of downtown Atlanta and 55 miles northwest of Macon.

Spalding County is a part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA).

Board of Elections

1. When will election occur in 2000?

The Presidential Preference Primary is Tuesday, March 7. All precincts will be open from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

The Primary Election will be held Tuesday, July 18 at all precincts from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. In this election the voter must choose to vote Democrat-Non-Partisan or Republican – Non-Partisan. Running as Non-Partisan will be Justices of Supreme Court of Ga., Judge of Court of Appeals of Ga., Judge of Superior Court, Judge of State Court, Chief Magistrate, Judge of Probate Court and the Board of Education from Districts 2,3,5,6 and 9. Running for partisan offices will be U.S. Senate, Secretary of State, Public Service Commissioner, U.S. Representatives from 3rd District, State Senators from 28th and 29th Districts, State Representatives from 106th and 107th Districts, District Attorney, Sheriff, Clerk of Superior Court, Tax Commissioner, Coroner and County Commissioners from Districts 1, 3 and 4.

Primary Runoff Election, if necessary, will be held Tuesday, August 8 in all precincts from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

General Election will be held Tuesday, November 7 in all precincts from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

General Election Runoff, if necessary, will be held Tuesday, November 28.

2. What do I need to do to run for office?

For County Commissioner you must have been a resident of Spalding County for one year prior to the election and must reside in the district you represent at the time of election.

For School Board you must be a person of good moral character and at least twenty-five years of age at the time of assuming office and must have resided in the district you represent for six months before the election.

All persons must qualify to run for office. Most will qualify from Monday, April 24 until noon on Friday, April 28. Local Non-Partisan offices will qualify with the Board of Elections in room 201 of the Courthouse Annex. Partisan candidates will qualify with their party at the designated headquarters. Federal and State candidates will qualify with the Secretary of State.
