July 9th, 2019

In the early morning hours of Monday July 1, 2019, Lieutenant Kevin Hollums, Firefighter Gage Long and Firefighter Jaden Brown, assigned to Engine 2 of the Spalding County Fire Department, were dispatched to a structure fire, along with units from the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office. While responding, Spalding County E-911 Dispatch updated the responding units that there was an unconscious victim at this location. Upon arrival, Lt. Hollums, Firefighter Long and Firefighter Brown were faced with a fully involved structure fire, along with the victim, who was now in cardiac arrest.

Lt. Hollums, and Firefighter Long immediately began life saving measures, and were joined by Firefighter Jaden Brown and Deputy David Porter of the Spalding Sheriff’s Office. Brown and Porter working together, began administering Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to the victim. After several minutes they were able to get a pulse from the victim who eventually regained consciousness on the scene and was transported to Spalding Regional Hospital for further treatment. Firefighter Brown rode along with the EMS crew to assist with the victim and then returned to the scene to assist personnel in fighting the fire.

In an interview with local media, Deputy Fire Chief of Operations Jamie Clark, provided that personnel immediately began CPR on the individual and within moments had literally saved the victim’s life. Deputy Chief Clark went on to say that:

“I am very proud of our firefighters and Spalding County Deputies. Their training and total dedication saved this individual’s life. The decision was made immediately, and the result was excellent. The Spalding County Fire Department is proud of our personnel and our public safety partners for the dedication they provide to the citizens of this County each and every day.

We are proud of Lieutenant Kevin Hollums, Firefighter Gage Long, Firefighter Jaden Brown and Deputy David Porter for their extraordinary efforts in a challenging environment. We appreciate the working partnership with the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office and will continue to work in tandem in all that we do. As firefighters and law enforcement, we never know when or what we may be face when we go out on a call and through the the efforts these men and women we are able to provide quality services to this community.”

According to Sheriff Darrell Dix: “Spalding County Fire and the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office have made an effort to work closely for the safety of our community. This event drives home the results of that effort and cooperation. Working together, a victim’s life was saved, and I could not be prouder of these first responders and the roles they played in this situation. The victim has been released from the hospital and has returned to work. The event was captured on Deputy David Porter’s body camera and it shows the professionalism exhibited by all involved. I have been in contact with the victim and his wife and we are attempting to arrange a meeting with them and the first responders who were there that night. Those folks lost everything they had in that fire, but they are alive and are rebuilding their lives.”
