Deputy Sheriff I Hiring Salary is $38,954 per year (based upon $16.97 per hour, 12-hr rotating shifts + daily roll call); 26 bi-weekly pay periods per year. Provisions of the Personnel Ordinance for Promotion/Demotion/Transfer Work Schedule: Rotating 12-hour shifts, Must be available to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Occasional overtime required. This position has been determined to be non-exempt under the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. MINIMUM TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS: Requires a High school diploma or state-awarded GED and a valid Georgia Driver’s License. Must have a good work and driving record.
Part-time Deputy Sheriff I Hiring Salary is $16.97 per hour (up to $21,178 per year based upon full part-time work schedule). Provisions of the Personnel Ordinance for Promotion/Demotion/Transfer Work Schedule: Day shift, part-time schedule not to exceed 24 hours per week. This position has been determined to be non-exempt under the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. MINIMUM TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS: Requires a High school diploma or state-awarded GED and a valid Georgia Driver’s License. Must have a good work and driving record.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS: High School diploma or state-awarded GED required with successful completion of required certification courses; must be a Georgia P.O.S.T. Certified Peace Officer in good standing. Must maintain required level of proficiency and certification in the use of firearms and evasive action/driving skills. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver’s License. Must pass a written examination, appear before a hiring board, and meet firearms qualifications as part of the application process.

Proficiency Pay Ability to earn up to 5% per year (15% maximum) for job related education and certifications. In-house Columbus State University education is available.
Retirement Plan effective 1/1/2019: Defined Benefit Plan – Mandatory contribution (deducted pre-tax from each paycheck – 2% for General Employees and 4% for Public Safety (certified firefighter and POST Mandated Law Enforcement Officers with Arrest Powers). This plan provides a guaranteed monthly benefit at normal retirement age and is based on the formula: salary x years of service x 2%. Early retirement (reduced and unreduced) is available; includes early out provision for Public Safety using a 75 rule with a minimum age of 50; payout options include life only, 10-year certain and joint & survivor. 5-year vesting period.
Eleven (11) Paid Holidays: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, the day after Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.
Sick Leave and Annual Leave: Sick leave is accrued at the rate of 8 hours per month. Annual leave is accrued monthly and depends on the length of service. See the Personnel Ordinance for the accrual schedule.
Major Medical and Prescription Coverage: All full-time employees are eligible for insurance offered through Anthem BlueCross BlueShield of Georgia on the 1st of the month following 1 full calendar month of employment. POS Gold (employee cost is $61.66 per month). Dependent coverage is available through our cafeteria plan, which allows for payment of premiums with “pre-tax” dollars.
Dental Insurance is also offered through BlueCross BlueShield of Georgia. Includes 3 cleanings every 12 months. There is a $50.00 deductible for other services. The plan pays 80% for basic and 50% for major services.
Vision Insurance is provided through Davis Vision. Routine vision and eye wear.
Life Insurance is provided for full-time employees in the amount of 1.5 times your annual salary, not to exceed $150,000. This coverage becomes effective on the first of the month following a full calendar month of employment.
Employee Assistance Service is available to all full-time employees and their immediate family.
Direct Deposit is mandatory and your check may be distributed to more than one bank account.
