SPALDING COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT REMINDS RESIDENTS TO: CHANGE YOUR CLOCKS AND CHANGE YOUR SMOKE DETECTOR BATTERIES

October 31st, 2017

The Spalding County Fire Department wants to remind residents that time changes on Sunday morning, November 5, at 2:00 a.m. The end of Daylight Savings Time is also a good time to change the batteries in the Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide Detectors in your home. Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide Detectors offer lifesaving, early warning alerts that could mean the difference between life and death.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) explains that three of every five home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no working smoke alarms. In fact, the NFPA encourages the:

  • Installation of smoke detectors in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of your home
  • Testing your smoke detectors every month
  • When a smoke detector sounds exit the building and stay outside
  • Replace all smoke detectors in your home every 10 years

Spalding County Fire Chief Kenny West acknowledges the significant role that smoke and carbon monoxide detectors play in the home and points out that fire safety education plays an important role in families being able to escape a fire in the home. Families need to have an escape plan to get out of their home that includes two ways out of every room.

For additional information on smoke detectors and fire prevention, visit the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) at www.nfpa.org or call the Spalding County Fire Department at 770-228-2129.
