The Spalding County Fire Department would like to remind our citizens that the time changes on Sunday morning, November 1, at 2am. The end of Daylight Savings Time should always serve as a reminder to change the batteries in the smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in your home. These lifesaving devices offer early warning alerts that could mean the difference between life and death. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) statistics show that three of every five home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes where smoke alarms were not working properly. In fact, the NFPA recommends that:
- Smoke detectors be installed in every bedroom, with additional detectors being installed outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home.
- Test the smoke detectors every month.
- When a smoke detector sounds, exit the building and stay outside.
- Replace all smoke detectors every 10 years.
Spalding County Fire Chief Kenny West acknowledges the significant role of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and stresses the importance of fire safety education within the home. Families need to have an escape plan should a fire occur and a vital part of that plan should include knowing two ways out of each room in the home.
